We have been watching this bird outside our kitchen window for about 2 weeks now. She has built a nest between the brick and the downspout and she's in it all the time. Jase said last week that he thought there may be eggs in it since she's spending so much time there. That just sent the girls reeling and wanting to see them. But the nest is every bit of 9-10 feet high and I was afraid that getting a ladder and having a peak inside would be a bad idea. I was attacked by a bird once, ya know? It wasn't pretty. Anyway, just yesterday we noticed a little baby bird head peaking up in the nest. Of course it's the ugliest thing you've ever seen...all bald and gangly. But we were excited to see it and talked about it as we watched during our Sunday lunch.
So I'm sitting at the kitchen table with our girls this morning and helping them with their "pages". I'm a big dork and make them do 2-3 pages of Bridge Books during the Summer. I know, I know...it's their vacation! But I don't want them to waste it. So they have to do these little pages each morning. Anyway, I saw the momma bird fly up to the nest and she had the longest worm ever in her mouth. I got the girls up to the window just in time to see THREE little bald heads pop up. Mouths open wide. Heads flaying around. And one by one she fed them. They lifted their heads to her and opened their mouths and she fed them. Syd yelled, "Mommy! That is beautiful!" I agreed. And thanked God for such a precious little head like hers!
I sat with our girls and talked about Jesus and how He makes mommy birds know how to feed their babies. And He makes baby birds know how to raise their head and open their mouths. What a sweet minute in time to be with my babies. Over and over the scene repeated. We watched her fly away and come back to them several times. More food. More trust. More provision. It is beautiful. He is beautiful. Child of God,
Lift up your head,
Open wide your mouth,
Be fed.
