The not so ripe muskedine...
115

It has been brought to my attention that I need to clarify what the hockey a "muskedine" is!...While I have no affinity whatsoever for this little grape-like fruit, my mom grew up eating these right off the vine. I did some research this morning and have found that they mainly grow in the southest. At least as far west as Mississippi and as far east as North Carolina.

Muskedines grow in abundance at my parents home and line the edge of the woods by their driveway. Mom and the girls go out in the summer and pull them right off the vine and eat them. Mom will hold the girls up to reach them because deer LOVE them as well. So you have to reach where the deer haven't managed to eat them first. And mom and dad had countless deer that ran free on their property. (They have just moved this Summer but mom brought some muskedines to plant at the new house.) The deer are really reindeer of course...seeing as my dad is in fact "the real Santa Claus". I'll cover that in another post!

So Rebecca, muskedines are a version of a grape that grow wild here in the south. When I told my mom about your sweet comment her reply was, "oh, it's so sad that she's never had one!..." So funny. My mom is a young whipper snapper, only 51 years old. But she tellls my girls story after story about growing up eating muskedines until she was sick! I think I'll let them have their own fun and just continue to wonder without actually tasting them!

Happy Monday!
