Happy Birthday, Joel!!!

September 4th...Our Joel is 2! I woke up this morning and thought about him first thing...not completely unusual. But today I was happy that it was his birthday and sad that he wasn't here for me to kiss his little face and spin him around and sing to him. It's an amazing thought to me that this will (God willing!) be the last birthday that he isn't with his family. So much to look forward to.

My blogger buddy, Rebecca, had a terrific post a while back about their son, Owen's 2 1/2 year b-day. Her sweet family baked a cake and it was great to see her kiddos helping out. I thought it was a neat idea at the time and wondered if we'd ever know when Joel's birthday was. The packet that came a week ago today, told us so much about our little boy...including his birthday.

So after we finished homework this afternoon, the girls and I baked a cake. I love to cook (somethings I can cook well and others...not so much). My sister in law is an exceptional baker. I am more of a dinner kinda girl. I like to put meals together. I cannot bake a cake (from scratch) to save my life. Bread either...it has to go in the bread machine or it will be terrible. Anyway, I grabbed the old standby...Dunkin Hines German Chocolate mix. I did spring for the homemade frosting that is just to die for (Thanks, Taylor. Hope you're not crying!). But it took so long to make the cake and cool the frosting that it was nearing bedtime for the girls and I iced it too quickly. It was so funny, the icing was running off of it everywhere. Oh well, Joel. It's the thought that counts...and we happen to think you're pretty fantastic! We love you sweet boy!

Kennedy made Joel this card while the cake was
baking this afternoon. It said, "Happy B-day Joel"
on the outside...

and "We love you! Happy B-Day!
-KG p.s. AKA Big Sister"
on the inside.
How sweet is that? "KG" is the nickname her
uncle Brent calls her...Kennedy Grace

The fun begins!

Syd, you're such a nut!

Gotta have a taste before we add the eggs...

Hard to believe but there were actually
no broken shells in the cake...
I had my doubts
at first!

Have you ever seen frosting ooze that much!?
It was yummy though. And wouldn't you know it, the
frosting set up perfectly as soon as the girls were in bed!

"Happy birthday dear Joel, happy birthday to you!"

We love you, Joel! Next year, you can blow out the candle!

OK, your sweet post & pictures had me crying! I LOVE all the photos of the girls helping to bake the cake!!!! And I think it turned out beautifully... runny icing and all. :) The little card with the "P.S. A.K.A." was too cute. I am certain Joel felt the love all the way in Thailand!

Happy 2nd birthday, little man!! Can't wait till you are home with your amazing family.

xoxo
